If you’ve found your standard notebook or netbook hard drive to be on the small side, then maybe the new 640GB Scorpio Blue from Western Digital is what you’ve been waiting for. This 2.5-inch hard drive will fit in just about any notebook or netbook, as it’s only 9.5mm thick.

So far all 2.5-inch hard drives over 500GB in size have been the thicker 12.5mm drives and these don’t tend to fit in a lot of thinner notebooks and even more so in netbooks. 640GB might not be a huge upgrade over a 500GB drive, but it’s still a step in the right direction and larger drives are most likely already in development.

The Scorpio Blue isn’t a high-performance drive, as the platters are only spinning at 5,400rpm, but it’s the trade-off you have to do to get the extra space. It does of course use a standard SATA 3Gb/s interface and it has 8MB of cache memory.

Price wise you’re looking at an affordable US$149 (€102) and the drive is available now. You can find the product page here
