thumb_x10_1Sony Ericsson finally came clean on the XPERIA X10 and it looks like it’s set to be one of the best Android handsets this year. Or at least it could’ve been had it not been for the fact that the X10 isn’t set to launch until the first quarter of next year.

We can’t but wonder why Sony Ericsson is waiting so long, although at least according to Engadget it seems like the software still needs some work. So what about the specifications then? Well, the leaked information was pretty much spot on the money with only some minor improvements.

The X10 does indeed use the 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU, it has a 4-inch capacitive touch screen display with 854×480 resolution (that’s two pixels more than the Motorola Droid/Milestone) and of course an 8.1 Megapixel Cybershot branded camera.

Other features include 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth, aGPS, 1GB of built in storage memory and an 8GB micro SD card as well as a 3.5mm headphone jack and a micro USB connector. Sony Ericsson seems to be planning a couple of different SKU’s for different markets, although all SKU’s support quad band GSM connectivity, but there will be different 3G support to choose from with either 900, 1,700 and 2,100MHz support or 800, 1,900 and 2,100MHz. The X10 will be available in white and black just as the early leaks suggested.

So what about the software? Well, the X10 is running Android with a custom UI which Sony Ericsson seems to be referring to as the UX Platform. Gordon over at TrustedReviews wasn’t sold on the fact that the X10 will ship with Android 1.6 rather than 2.0 which really is a shame, especially as according to him, the handset won’t launch until February next year and according to Sony Ericsson, only in selected markets by then.

The screen is apparently something of a grease magnet as well and it’s not as vibrant as the Samsung devices with AMOLED displays. Both Gordon and Engadget are complaining about the fact that the X10 feels sluggish which is not good news considering the 1GHz Snapdragon CPU, but with over three months to go until the potential launch date, we’d expect Sony Ericsson to fix this.
