thumb_HTC_HD2_1The much rumoured HTC HD2 has finally gotten official and it must be the HTC product with the shortest product name ever, as it seems like HTC decided to drop the word touch from its product names, despite the recently Touch2 still carrying it.

The HD2 looks set to be a direct competitor with the Toshiba TG01, especially as both seem to carry a similarly steep price tag, at least without a carrier discount. The dimensions are also similar, as the HD measures 120.5x67x11mm (HxWxD) whereas the TG01 measures 130x70x9.9mm (HxWxD). The HD2 weighs in at 157g while the TG01 is a bit lighter at 129g.

The HD2 wins slightly by offering a larger 4.3-inch display while the TG01 “only” has a 4.1-inch display, although both offer the same WVGA (800×480 pixels) screen resolution. The two also use the same 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU and both models come with 512MB of ROM, however, HTC has fitted a massive 448MB of RAM, while Toshiba is only offering 256MB.

HTC also offers a better camera with 5 Megapixels compared to Toshiba’s 3.2 Megapixels and HTC also incorporates a pair of LED lights, although both manufacturers offer auto focus. Both the HD2 and TG01 offers 802.11b/g WiFi, but again the HD2 wins a small victory by adding Bluetooth 2.1 over the TG01′s Bluetooth 2.0. Both devices also offer a built in GPS receiver with A-GPS support, a built in accelerometer, a micro SD card slot and of course Windows Mobile 6.5 (the TG01 can be upgraded from Windows Mobile 6.1).

Both handsets offer quad band GSM connectivity, but Toshiba only offers support for the 2,100MHz 3G band, whereas HTC also offers support for the 900MHz band. Both handsets offer 7.2Mbit HSDPA and 2Mbit HSUPA speeds. The HD2 can be set up to share its internet connection over USB or Bluetooth and it can also act as a WiFi router.

Overall the two handsets are very similar, but it seems like the HD2 might have a slight edge over the TG01, although you’ll have to wait until the middle of November to get your hands on one, while the TG01 is available now. Price wise you’re looking at a pre-order price of €649.99 ($829.99) for the HTC HD2, while the TG01 can be had for a fair bit cheaper, at least in Europe where it goes for €470-480.
