HP to launch a range of new notebooks
HP is readying as many as six new notebooks, although only three of them really are new and of those, one is a netbook. The new models are the dm1, dm3 and Mini 311, with the first two being based on the Intel CULV platform and the latter featuring the Nvidia ION chipset.
The details are still pretty scarce with regards to the dm1, with the only details so far being that it's an 11.6-inch notebook based on Intel's CULV platform. However, the notebookreview's forums have some pretty detailed specs for the dm3.
The dm3 seems to be a direct replacement for the dv3 as it has a 13.3-inch display which puts it in the same market segment. One interesting point about the dm3 is that it will be available either with the Intel CULV platform or a solution from AMD. The AMD solution will be based on the Athlon Neo processor and AMD's HD 3200 graphics which is suggesting that the dm3 will use the 780G chipset from AMD, in favour of the 690E which was used in the dv2. Optionally the AMD model will also feature an ATI Mobility Radeon 3410 graphics card.

Both the Intel and AMD versions of the dm3 will come with an HDMI port, a USB/eSATA combo port, a chiclet keyboard and neither model will come with a built in optical drive. As such the dm3 is expected to weigh in at 1.8kg. The dm3 is expected to start shipping in October with Windows 7 for an estimated retail price of €677($968).
The Mini 311 is an interesting critter, as it's HP's first take on an ION based netbook. However, it seems like HP has gone for the "feature light" ION LE chipset which doesn't support DirectX 10. This means that you won't see any of the great CUDA features that the normal ION chipset offers. The ION LE has been developed specifically for Windows XP netbooks, so in other words, the Mini 311 will only come with Windows XP.
Other features include an Atom N270 processor, 1GB of DDR3 memory (yes, that is correct as the ION chipset only supports DDR3 memory), a standard 160GB 2.5-inch hard drive, 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth, 10/100Mbit Ethernet, HDMI (although how useful this really will be is another question), a memory card reader, a webcam and three USB 2.0 ports. The Mini 311 is expected to weigh in at 1.46kg with a 6-cell battery. You can find a full spec list here in German.
The other HP models that will get a product refresh are the dv6, dv7 and dv8 and the dv7 is said to get a mobile Core i7 CPU (code name Clarksfield) which is expected to launch later this year alongside with a new mobile chipset.
