Commtiva might be one of the smaller players when it comes to mobile devices, but the company is planning four new Android devices which should arrive this year. Two are budget models with QWERTY keypads and the other two are more traditional touch screen handsets.
First up is the X1, it’s running Android 1.5 and has a 2.36-inch QVGA (320×240 pixels) display. It doesn’t appear to be a touch screen which is somewhat novel on an Android device, as so far we haven’t seen any non-touch screen devices. However, Google was talking about handsets without touch screen support back in the early days of Android, although no handsets ever materialized. As such you’ll have to rely on the track ball for navigation as well as some additional buttons around it.

The X1 is powered by ST Ericsson’s PNX6715 SoC which operates at 416MHz. It has 256MB of RAM and ROM and accepts micro SD cards if you want to add more memory. It has a built in GPS and FM radio as well as a 3 Megapixel fixed focus camera, a micro USB 2.0 port and a 3.5mm headset jack.
Commtiva will offer models with HSDPA support for the 900/2100MHz bands or the 850/2100MHz bands as well as quad band GSM/EDGE. Finally the X1 comes with a 1200mAh battery. It measures 115x62x11.5mm and weighs in at 109g. Although the QWERTY keypad is appealing, we can’t say we’re sold in having an Android device without a touch screen.
The X3 is the X1’s sibling as it features exactly the same hardware, although for some reason Commtiva saw fit to reduce the RAM to only 128MB on this model. It also has a smaller 1100mAh battery, only a 2 Megapixel camera and as you can see by the pictures, it’s also a slider. We’re not sure what the advantage of having a slider for this form factor would be, but at least it makes it slightly more compact in your pocket at 83.5×61.8×17.3mm. The X3 weighs in at a slightly heavier 115.5g though.

The Z51 is a slightly more appealing device and the best looking out of the four new models in our opinion. It’s running Android 1.6 and is powered by a Qualcomm MSM7227 SoC which operates at 600MHz. It has a 3.2-inch HVGA (most likely 480×320 pixels) capacitive touch screen, 512MB of RAM, 256MB of ROM and a micro SD card. It also features 802.11b/g WiFi as well as Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR. You also get a 5 Megapixel camera with auto focus and LED flash, GPS, a digital compass, an accelerometer, a micro USB 2.0 port and a 3.5mm audio jack thrown in for good measures.

The Z51 will come with support for either the 900, 1900 and 2100MHz 3G bands or the 850, 1900 and 2100MHz bands. It supports HSDPA but we don’t have any details as to what speeds are supported and it does of course also feature quad band GSM support. The battery is rated at 1230mAh and the Z51 measures 116x57x12.45mm and it weighs in at 110g.
Finally we have the Z71 which shares all of its features with the Z51 with the small exception of having half the ROM. It also has a track ball fitted just below the screen and will be available in either white or black trim. It’s slightly smaller at 114.9×56.8×12.6mm although it’s a tiny bit heavier at 114g.

We don’t have any availability details on either of these new devices and they’ll most likely be sold under other brands or as network branded handsets once they arrive in the market.
