For those of you following the development of Creative/ZiiLABS Zii Egg, you’ll be happy to know that the company has finally launched Android 1.6 and it can be downloaded from the ZiiLABS website.
It’s not intended to go straight to consumers, especially as the Zii Egg is a development platform, although it doesn’t need too much spit and polish to become a retail product. However, the just released Android version seems to need a little bit more tweaking to work, at least according to anythingbutipod who’s already had a go at installing Android on their Zii Egg.

Apparently the camera isn’t working as yet and there are some phone options present such as a signal strength indicator, despite the fact that the Zii Egg doesn’t incorporate any kind of phone functionality. Still, this is a developer version, so perfection wasn’t expected, but it’s odd that the phone bits are still present.

It’s unlikely that we’ll see any Zii Egg based devices in retail this year according to anythingbutipod which is a shame, as the platform seems to have a lot of potential. We’re still holding our fingers crossed for a manufacturer that will step up and add 3G connectivity and phone capabilities, but this might just be a pipe dream for now.
